Protection & Control Engineer
Are you an ambitious Protection & Control Engineer with around 3–5 years of experience, looking to work on major renewable energy and grid infrastructure projects whilst developing your expertise alongside industry-leading specialists?
Here at PSC we are growing our Protection & Control team to support an expanding portfolio of renewable energy, transmission and distribution projects across the UK and internationally. We're looking for engineers with experience in protection studies, relay settings, grading studies, scheme design and power system analysis who are keen to take the next step in their careers.
You'll collaborate with highly experienced consultants, work directly with clients and gain exposure to a broad range of technically challenging projects. Alongside delivering core Protection & Control services, over time you'll have the opportunity to develop skills in advanced power system studies such as RMS studies, EMT studies, harmonic studies, stability studies and sub-synchronous oscillation studies.

We will reimburse 50% of your course fees, up to a maximum of £5,000.00 a year. We have been working in a distributed fashion for years and are open to hybrid and remote work (from the UK).
What You’ll Do:
This role offers a broad range of technical and consulting responsibilities, providing exposure to projects across the full project lifecycle. Typical activities include power system analysis; generator connection studies; protection setting schedules; grading studies; conceptual and detailed design; commissioning support; fault investigations and other specialist consultancy services related to power system protection. Alongside this, you will regularly engage with clients, helping to deliver high-quality technical solutions and advice.
You will also get opportunities to represent PSC in industry forums, working groups and conferences as well as taking part in client presentations. You will be working closely with a collaborative global team of expert Senior and Principal Consultants, alongside a wider network of talented engineers across all stages of their careers.
You:
Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic, technically minded engineers, with approximately 3-5 years of relevant experience in Protection & Control of transmission/distribution systems. Your primary expertise will be in the design of protection systems for high voltage networks, including protection application, relay settings and scheme designs.
Ideally you:
· Have knowledge of transmission HV design process and related project experience.
· Have approximately 3-5 years experience in Protection & Control FEED, Owner’s Engineer and/or detailed design activities for high voltage installations (up to 400kV).
· Be a strong team player with a client-focused mindset and excellent customer-facing skills.
· Have the ability to work flexibly across multiple projects.
· Hold knowledge of power system steady and transient analysis, fault study and protection theory.
· Maintain an ethical and professional business manner in interaction with team members and customers.
· Have experience undertaking fault investigations and root cause analysis.
· Possess the required technical skills to execute projects, identify opportunities, and write Scope of Work proposals.
· Are proficient in technical report writing, MS Word and Excel.
· Have excellent communication skills including technical writing and presentations.
· Demonstrate a proactive approach to learning, strong teamwork and a customer-focused mindset.
Other desirable skills include:
· Working experience with study software and power system tools such as PowerFactory (DIgSILENT), ETAP, PSS/E, PSCAD, IPSA.
· Experience undertaking Arc Flash studies and electrical safety assessments would be advantageous.
· An understanding of protection coordination, relay setting calculations and protection grading studies would be advantageous.
· Working knowledge on substation communication protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP, Modbus.
· Experience with relay supplier software such as Agile, DIGSI, etc.
· National Grid TP141 authorisation.
