Consultant Engineer (Earthing & Lightning Protection) – South Wales / South West England
Are you an Electrical Engineer with experience in earthing, grounding, lightning protection or electrical safety studies, looking to develop your expertise whilst working on critical energy infrastructure projects?
Here at PSC, we are looking for an Consultant Engineer (Earthing & Lightning Protection) to join our specialist team supporting transmission, distribution and renewable energy projects across the UK.
This opportunity would suit engineers with approximately 2–5 years of relevant experience who already have exposure to earthing, grounding or lightning protection activities and are looking to further develop their expertise within a specialist consulting environment.
Whether your background is in earthing, grounding, HV infrastructure, substations or power systems engineering, you’ll already have some experience in earthing, grounding, lightning protection or electrical safety studies and be keen to build upon that experience working alongside experienced consultants on a variety of technically challenging projects.

What You’ll Do
This role combines office-based engineering work with practical field experience, providing exposure to projects across the full project lifecycle.
Typical activities include:
· Earthing and grounding studies for electrical infrastructure projects.
· Earthing system design and analysis.
· Site investigations and surveys.
· Soil resistivity testing and field data collection.
· Electrical safety assessments.
· Technical report writing and client deliverables.
· Working directly with clients to develop practical engineering solutions.
· Collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams across a variety of projects.
You will also have the opportunity to further develop your expertise in specialist areas including:
· Advanced earthing and grounding studies.
· Lightning protection assessments.
· Impressed voltage studies.
· Earthing system modelling and analysis.
Location, Travel & Site Work
· The role involves a combination of remote working, office collaboration and site-based engineering activities.
· Most project work is located across South Wales and South West England, so candidates based within this region are likely to be best positioned for the role.
· You should expect to undertake regular site visits and surveys as part of project delivery. Depending on project requirements, this may involve occasional overnight stays.
· Site work may include activities such as visual inspections, site surveys, electrical measurements and soil resistivity testing.
· When not attending client sites, you’ll have the flexibility to work remotely, alongside opportunities to collaborate with colleagues in person on a regular basis.
You:
We are looking for enthusiastic and technically minded engineers with approximately 2–5 years of relevant experience within the power or electrical engineering sector.
You will ideally:
· Hold a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
· Have experience working on power transmission, distribution, substation or renewable energy projects.
· Have practical experience of earthing, grounding, lightning protection or electrical safety studies.
· Have an understanding of earthing system design principles and associated standards.
· Be comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
· Have a client-focused mindset and strong communication skills.
· Be willing to undertake site visits and fieldwork when required.
· Demonstrate a proactive approach to learning and professional development.
· Have the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
Desirable Experience
The following would be advantageous:
· Experience using earthing software such as CDEGS or XGSLab.
· Soil resistivity testing and site survey experience.
· Earthing system modelling and analysis.
· Lightning protection studies and assessments.
· Impressed voltage studies.
· Technical report writing and consulting experience.
· Knowledge of UK transmission and distribution networks.
